In Spring - Scorebook (with Audio Files)
The full scorebook of all pieces on James Waterman and Joel Reed Mankey’s In Spring. Includes audio files of every song on the album.
For each piece in this collection, we have included either a lead sheet or a reduced band sheet, depending on what best represents the music. The lead sheets include melody and harmony along with chord changes and selected rhythmic hits, similar in spirit to what you might find in The Real Book, while the reduced band sheets expand this framework to include key accompaniments and, in many cases, bass lines that outline the harmonic motion more fully. In some cases, both formats are included to provide additional flexibility for different ensemble settings. These formats are meant to encourage flexibility so that a wide range of ensembles can bring the music to life, from large groups with mixed instrumentation to soloists or duos. Two exceptions to this approach are included: our title track, In Spring, which appears here in a beautiful piano and voice reduction arranged by the prominent and exceptional composer Madeline Barrett, and our closing piece, Pick Up Your Fiddle, which is presented in its fully orchestrated form for a small folk orchestra. Madeline also engraved all of the notation throughout this book, helping shape it into a complete and cohesive score collection.
We welcome you to take inspiration from the percussive accompaniments heard on our recordings, but we also encourage you to experiment freely and accompany any of these pieces with whatever percussion instruments you have available, whether djembe, drum set, frame drums, or something entirely your own.
This score book is an invitation to join the conversation that inspired these pieces. These are living works meant to be reshaped, reinterpreted, and played by anyone who connects with them. Within these pages you will find space for improvisation, ornamentation, and your own voice. Our hope is that performing this music brings you the same feeling that guided us in its creation: a sense of renewal, wonder, and shared humanity.
